(Your Veterinarians at Sky Lake Animal Hospital)
We believe that by educating you about the most common problems befalling your pet, you then become a part of our healthcare team, bringing a longer, better quality of life to your loved one. She/He deserves nothing less. Okay.…let’s get started.
There are two areas of disease so very common, that we as practitioners see them every day; yet most pet owners are unaware of these afflictions or their serious ramifications..…oral disease and kidney disease.
Oral Disease (Which has been shown to lead to Kidney Disease):
Fully, 80% of the pets we see have some level of periodontal (gum) disease, causing variable levels of discomfort and ultimately tooth loss. 50% of the cats we see over 3 years of age have erosions of the enamel of their teeth, causing holes and exposing the pulp of the tooth where the nerve is located. These teeth are very painful. Can something be done to correct this terrible problem? You Bet! Read on.
Kidney Disease:
is VERY common in pets, & in it's early stages is silent & not recognized by you the pet owner, until 80% of the tissue is affected!
Kidney disease is one of the more frequent problems we see in middle aged and older dogs and cats that causes early and prolonged deterioration in their health and premature death.
Recent research now tells us that by frequent monitoring of new blood and urine values, we can diagnose kidney problems before our loved ones become ill, even before their lab tests rise out of the normal range. Yes! Our computers can, by looking at trends over time, determine loss of kidney function before the actual values leave the normal range.
You ask, “Why is this important?”
Because we can change the course of the disease once it is Recognized; treat a specific disease and cure it, or at the very minimum, slow disease progression with appropriate medication and diet.
So, now that you are an informed pet parent, how do you start the process of better healthcare to relieve pain, improve & extend quality of life, for your young, middle aged or senior pet?
Easy. Call one of our terrific Receptionists and tell her you received this health bulletin; that you are a savvy pet owner, and you need to schedule an oral exam and Wellness Health Panel, {“Bark” panel for dogs /“Meow” Panel for cats} as soon as possible.
